Building Envelope Best Practices

Water damage is one of the leading concerns for new construction builders, homebuyers, and renters, as well as the City of Philadelphia.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections (L+I) has for the first time contracted with an expert in the field of building science. Noted professional Christine Williamson toured construction sites, met with inspectors, design professionals, contractors, and others. Williamson’s investigations into residential construction in the city will culminate in recommendations on best practices for raising quality and safety. In addition to consulting, teaching, and speaking, Ms. Williamson hosts the popular Building Science Fight Club Instagram account.

Members of BIA's Building Innovation Committee (BIC) met with Ms. Williamson and discussed what she had seen at Philadelphia construction sites to date and what opportunities our members see for improving construction practices. And on November 3, the BIC hosted a building envelope best practices workshop. From the foundation to the roof deck, our member experts dissected best practices, code minimums, and the importance of sequencing and oversight. Click here to download a copy of the presentation.

A report from Ms. Williamson is expected at the end of the month. The BIA looks forward to working with L+I as a resource and educational partner.

Thanks to the following members for sponsoring the workshop.
