Prevent Heat Illness at Work!
Although OSHA's proposed rule “Heat Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings” is not yet law, it is a useful resource for preventing heat injuries at work. With the recent heat experienced in this region and more to come as the summer progresses, it’s critical for employers to provide controls that protect workers. Safety tips to prevent heat-related illnesses include the following.
Plan ahead. Know what the heat index will be and prepare workers.
Water, rest, and shade are the best tools you can utilize.
Acclimatize new workers or those who have been away from the job site for a time.
Educate workers on the signs of heat illness and what to do if they recognize the symptoms in themselves or others.
